Colonel Jack O'Neill is a fictional character in the Stargate franchise, primarily portrayed by Richard Dean Anderson. Introduced in the 1994 film Stargate, O'Neill is a U.S. Air Force Special Operations officer haunted by the accidental death of his son. He's initially tasked with leading a mission through the Stargate, a portal to another planet, to assess a potential threat to Earth.

In the television series Stargate SG-1, O'Neill leads SG-1, the flagship team exploring the galaxy through the Stargate. His sharp wit, sarcasm, and unconventional methods often mask a deep sense of responsibility and loyalty to his team and the safety of Earth. Throughout the series, he rises in rank, eventually becoming a General.

O'Neill's character development involves overcoming his past trauma, forming strong bonds with his teammates, including Daniel Jackson, Samantha Carter, and Teal'c, and repeatedly saving the Earth from various alien threats, notably the Goa'uld. He becomes a key figure in the Stargate program, evolving from a reluctant participant to a dedicated defender of humanity.
